Dr. Alok Kumar is an Associate Professor and Faculty Member at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Biotechnology at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow. Dr. Kumar’s research has been focused on pathophysiological mechanisms underlying post-traumatic neuroinflammation, neuroviral infection, neurodegeneration, loss of neurological function, and development of key treatment approaches to promote repair mechanism and functional recovery. In recent studies, he demonstrated the activation status and functional role of resident microglia and infiltrating blood-borne monocytes/macrophage in the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) brain and Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) in both young and aged population, and how these contributed to chronic neurodegeneration and long-term neurological dysfunction after brain trauma.
The long term goal of Dr. Kumar’s research lab is to develop key “molecular markers” and new biotechnological methodologies to address clinical need in treatment of devastating diseases including neurological disorders. More specifically, he is interested in exploring the possibilities in modulating glial-neuronal communication which might be the central event in pathogenesis of chronic neurodegenerative disorders. To reach this; two lines of research in lab are being conducted. The first line is neuroprotection, which includes investigating novel molecules that may play a central or convergent role in regulation of multiple brain injury mechanisms such as protein clearance /autophagy regulation, glial mediated neuroinflammation, extracellular vesicles modulation for intercellular communication. A second line of research interest is neuronal/axonal regeneration by using cellular transplantation or modulated extracellular vesicles treatment to promote neuronal/axonal regeneration.
Dr. Kumar is the recipient of several research awards including the first place and best poster award in National Capital Area TBI Research Symposium at NIH USA, top twenty best research fellow position in the student competition at National Neurotrauma Conference in Phoenix, USA and many travel awards from National Neurotrauma Symposium, USA, Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS) and International Society for Neurochemistry (ISN), USA. Dr. Kumar is an ad-hoc reviewer of several International neurotrauma and neuroscience journals. He is a member of the National Neurotrauma Society USA, International Brain Research Organization (IBRO), France, and the Society for Neuroscience USA. Recently, he has been awarded with Ramalingaswami re-entry fellowship from Department of Biotechnology (Govt. Of India) and leads the “Japanese encephalitis brain viral infection” program at Molecular Medicine and Biotechnology department, SGPGIMS, Lucknow.
