DBT-BIRAC COVID-19 Research Consortium Grant
In an effort to develop safe and effective biomedical solutions against COVID-19, Dr. Santosh Kumar Verma, Assistant Professor, Department of Molecular Medicine & Biotechnology, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow has recently received research grant approval from Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India (Ministry of Science & Technology) under Department of Biotechnology (DBT)-Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) invited application call for COVID-19 Research Consortium.
As Principal lead investigator of this project, Dr. Verma will be developing unique cell-culture models for enabling prophylactic and therapeutics research on COVID-19. Such in-vitro pre-clinical model hold great promise to validate repurposable drugs, screen biological and chemical drug library and in detection of virus neutralizing antibodies. Being a multi-institutional funded project, study will be conducted in collaboration with Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi and University of Delhi.

The Department of Molecular Medicine & Biotechnology was established under Pradhanmantri Shwasth Sewa Yojna (PMSSY) by the 59th Governing body of the institute. Our vision is to improve healthcare through the discovery of molecular predictors of diseases and to sculpt the emerging field of Molecular Medicine by fine-tuning our teaching and training programs to the changing needs of modern medicine. The Department came into existence in 2010. Molecular Medicine is an emerging scientific field with various connotations. Currently, such a discipline exists in only a handful of universities across the world. We are the only such facility in a tertiary-care hospital set up.
